Tips for having a great maternity photo shoot are not complicated and many just need some extra thought and some planning. Read on for tips on when to book your photo shoot, what to wear, and more to make your maternity photo session a breeze.
The first tip to having a great maternity photo shoot is making sure that you book the shoot at the right time in your pregnancy. If you book too early there is a chance that you may not look obviously pregnant and you may not be feeling your best. The best time during your pregnancy for great photos and a great session will be around thirty weeks! Afterward the pregnancy belly could really begin to mess with your ability to move, pose, maintain balance, and bladder control.
Around thirty five weeks the belly tends to drop as the baby prepares itself for exit and may sit further on a nerve, or reek havoc on your ability to stay out of the bathroom. The most successful portraits are results of comfortable photo sessions where you are feeling your best and beautiful as an expectant mother!
Be sure to talk about this with your photographer and start there when planning this exciting photo shoot!
A great tip for a great maternity photo shoot is to style yourself accordingly. If this is a couples shoot or a family session then rely on the concept of coordinating outfits rather than matching each other. Refer to the color wheel, or the many color pairing references online to find colors to wear that compliment each other.
If you are too matchy-matchy it will only be a distraction in the resulting photo and we want to be sure and showcase the reason why you are commemorating this momentous occasion. Therefore, be sure to style your family so that the focal point is the precious new arrival.
A really beautiful option for the mother to be to wear is a long flowing maxi dress. This cut hugs in all the right places, conceals any problem areas you may be concerned about, and looks elegant.
After you have chosen a color palette choose a long flowing maxi in the color you desire and accessorize with a beautiful statement necklace or scarf depending on the season. Also take the season your session is in for the color you choose.
A long flowing maxi is a surefire style success but is by no means the only style to rock during your photo session. A form fitting dress that hugs your beautiful body is also a lovely look on pregnant women. Your bump is beautiful and you should certainly show it off for your photos. A three quarter sleeve dress that is calf length and curve hugging is a gorgeous way to style yourself for your portrait.
Be sure to pic your undergarments carefully as well. You won’t enjoy seeing lines in the finished pictures.
The color can be neutral and accessorized or bolder and complimentary to your surroundings or the other people in your family session. If this is a photo shoot with your first child or any older children coordinate their outfits to compliment yours.
We want these photos to be timeless, and when you look back at them we want you to love them right after the baby is born and when that same baby is graduating high school, or having their own baby. So, that being said try to really evaluate patterns when choosing what to wear and stick to classics. We don’t want your outfit to be dated, or a distraction.
Showing your lovely belly outright is also an option. If this is for you be sure to wear loose fitting garments on the day of the shoot to avoid any skin impressions that may be left by maternity pants or snug fitting shirts. The same rule applies to watches and jewelry that you may normally wear during the day.
Moisturize your skin about an hour before your session. You want a healthy glow not a shiny belly, and don’t forget to moisturize your knees and elbows too!
If manicures and pedicures are not normally your thing consider getting them done for this occasion. Something nice and neutral on your fingers will give a nice result in photos, especially if you end up doing some shots with your hands on your belly. If this is a photo shoot with your partner as well, remind them to take care to have clean hands and trimmed nails as well! While we are at it, if kids are in the session be sure to address their hands too!
Toes may make an appearance as well, depending on the style of the session and you don’t want to worry about calluses and half painted toenails either.
If you aren’t interested in wearing a dress then don’t. Black tapered yoga style pants and dark jeans are great options that will elongate your legs.
Be sure to give some thoughts to your shoes. Be sure to coordinate them to your outfit and if you feel that you want to wear heeled boots or high heels then please bring a pair of comfy slippers or shoes to wear before the shoot, during any breaks, and to go home in.
When choosing a top to pair with your pants consider the actual fabric. Cotton and silk drapes beautifully. Try to choose a top that does not have t shirt sleeves as they are not as flattering. Try a longer sleeve or a tank top.
While there is no doubt that the changes a woman’s body goes through during pregnancy is amazing and beautiful it is also true that these changes leave a woman feeling a tad insecure sometimes or a stranger in her own skin. Therefore, please ask and trust your photographer to guide you through some posing ideas and positions you may pose in to highlight your belly in the most beautiful way.
Showcase that gorgeous belly by looking straight on at the camera. Place one hand on top and the other on the bottom to really highlight your belly. Arch your back just slightly and look straight into the camera. The lighting will hit the high point of your figure and make for a lovely portrait.Lay Down
If the time of year and place for the session allow it, lay down and have your photographer capture that perspective or your belly.Side Profile
The side profile pose can be very striking as it shows every curvature of your pregnancy and can be done as a silhouette or while at a slight angle to capture a carefree look that is elegant and timeless.Posing with loved ones
Have your partner place their hands on your belly for a timelessly sweet photo. Or have them kiss your belly in the photo. This can also apply to children in the photo session as you can have the older sibling kissing your belly or cradled against it. There are many ways to include your loved ones interactions with your pregnant belly that will convey the love and excitement that they and you feel.
A few fun ideas that you can discuss with your photographer before your session!
Bring baby shoes, baby books, little pumpkins during the fall. You could bring the ultrasound photos, or a chalkboard notating the details of your pregnancy, or name announcements.Milk Baths
Milk bath photography is a beautiful option for pregnant women. The milk bath offers concealment while highlighting the gorgeousness of your nude pregnant body. While it may not produce photos that you want to show the whole family it does result in strikingly beautiful, peaceful photos of the mom to be. I encourage you to research it if you are thinking you want to do something different and intimate.Include the family pets
In a few weeks life will be changing for everyone! This includes your pets! Have them in your photo session too if you like. Pets are often as much a member of the family as anyone and if you want them at your session, make it so!
A baby is a momentous occasion! Have who you love in the photos with you. Your partner, older children, whoever you wish that can be there! There are a suggestions that make planning, styling, having a maternity photo session easier, or more what you envision stylistically. But, there is no right way to do it other than how you want it to be and who you want to be there for it.
